Silk Paintings

2023 -

This series of silk paintings investigates my cultural identity through generational wisdom and familial bonds. Being an immigrant to Canada and a visible minority is a big part of my identity, and these paintings represent a maturing of my self awareness of being “Chinese Canadian”. Now that I am older, I have come to appreciate and value the connections I have to my culture and my family more. I connect with my culture by taking inspiration from Chinese scroll paintings, combining traditional techniques and philosophies with my own experiences and adaptations of the imagery. I bring Chinese silk painting into the Chinese Canadian context by reinterpreting the subject matter and calligraphy to speak to diasporic experiences.
